Azerbaijani Defense Minister Zakir Hasanov received on January 24 a Finnish delegation led by the Director General of the Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Maria Livala.
Hasanov briefed the guest, who is on a working visit to Azerbaijan, about activities in the liberated lands as well as the situation on the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the Defense Ministry said.
The Minister underlined that Azerbaijan and Finland are successfully cooperating within the framework of NATO’s Partnership for Peace program.
In turn, Livala stressed the importance of strengthening ties between the two countries.
The officials also discussed bilateral relations, regional peace and stability and other topics of mutual interest.
At the end of September 2021, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov met with his Finnish counterpart Pekka Olavi Haavisto on the sidelines of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The parties expressed their satisfaction with the level of development of bilateral relations and multilateral cooperation and exchanged views on the prospects for expanding these ties. They also underlined the mutual understanding existing between Azerbaijan and Finland at all levels.
During the meeting, the ministers exchanged views on various aspects of the bilateral cooperation agenda, including strengthening political, economic, humanitarian, educational, agricultural, high-tech, investment, cultural, as well as regional security issues, the implementation of the provisions of the trilateral declarations and the achievement of confidence-building measures.
Bayramov informed Haavisto about the acts of large-scale deliberate destruction committed by Armenia in the liberated lands of Azerbaijan, the destruction of historical and cultural heritage, large-scale damage to the environment, as well as the threat landmines and informed Pekka Olavi Haavisto extensively of the current reconstruction.
He noted that despite decades of Armenia’s aggressive policy against Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan is ready to normalize relations with the neighboring country based on the principles of international law.
Minister Pekka Haavisto said his country wants to expand relations with Azerbaijan in various fields. He said Azerbaijan’s stance on normalizing relations with Armenia is commendable and stressed the importance of implementing the trilateral ceasefire agreement signed by Baku, Moscow and Yerevan. in November 2021.
Finland recognized Azerbaijan’s independence on December 30, 1991. Diplomatic relations were established on March 24, 1992.
