NATO JFC Brunssum | Commander of Joint Force Command Brunssum visits Sweden, Finland and Norway

Brunssum, Netherlands – The Commander of Joint Force Command Brunssum (COM JFCBS), General Guglielmo Luigi Miglietta, visited Sweden, Finland and Norway from August 22 to 26, 2022. The purpose of this visit was to strengthen a relationship already solid with the two partner nations, Sweden and Finland.

These exercises, and their context within the Alliance’s broader strategic deterrence and defense initiatives, are critical to increasing the readiness and flexibility of our forces.

In Sweden, General Miglietta met with the State Secretary of the Swedish Ministry of Defence, Mr. Jan-Olof Lind and the Swedish Chief of Defense, General Micael Bydén. General Miglietta was received at a welcome ceremony at the Karlberg Military Academy in Solna, where he met the Head of Joint Operations, Lieutenant General Michael Claesson. A NATO partner for nearly 30 years, Sweden maintains a close working relationship with the Alliance by participating in joint military exercises and sending its own forces on military operations.

The general then traveled to Finland, where he met with Defense Chief General Timo Kivinen and Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen. General Miglietta also visited the European Center of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats in Helsinki, an international organization with 31 member states, whose role is to share member capabilities to counter hybrid threats.

Like neighboring Sweden, Finland joined the Partnership for Peace (PfP) program in 1994 and the two countries are among NATO’s most active partners.

“The meeting with these eminent commanders and ministers from NATO partners provided a unique opportunity to exchange views and thoughts on continuing to adapt in response to the threats and challenges of today and tomorrow. “, said General Miglietta.

The next day, General Miglietta traveled to the Norwegian Joint Headquarters (JHQ) in Bodø to meet his commanding officer, Lieutenant General Yngve Odlo. The Norwegian JHQ is the headquarters responsible for all Norwegian military operations and combined joint exercises. Norway is a key founding member of NATO, which is capable of hosting large-scale multinational exercises. These allow troops from allied and partner nations to train and improve their interoperability in a particularly harsh environment due to extreme winter weather conditions.

“These exercises, and their context within the Alliance’s broader strategic deterrence and defense initiatives, are critical to increasing the readiness and flexibility of our forces,” said General Miglietta.
